Jabber's English Note---041

To talk about some special topics, we need learn some special words.

Take stocks as an example. I don't think many of us have stocks of US and Canadian companies, because we have been here not for a long time. If you are learning English as I do, you may browse some financial news on the Internet or in the newspaper. You will frequently see a word---scoop. By scoop people mean some information from the inside, or inside information. If you have some scoop, you can take a lot of advantages in buying and selling the stocks. Every year, some big figures in the USA are put behind the bar because they utilized the scoop.

    • 看来加拿大和中国一样,都是朝里有人好做官,内部消息对炒股很重要。可惜我等不但穷书生一个,而且新到贵地,实在无缘认识Scoop。
      • You will have opportunites to play stock soon. Come in, please!
One of my friends began to play with stocks 8 years ago. He invested $800. Because he was poor, he just bought 2 or 5 shares each time. He told me most of that sum of money has gone.

Scoop is a very useful word. For instance, as my company hired new contractors, I informed some of my friends of the news. It is kind of scoop.
        • They bought the shares themselves, or by an agency? I want to buy 100 share of Nortel now.
          • You can find some on-line sites to do that
I opened a ROTH-IRA account at the beginning of this year. That's part of my retirement plan. I put in $2,000 and bought some ORACLE stocks. That's the only stocks I hold. I chose ORACLE because I believed database server softwares are always needed. A few days ago, I lost $400 within a single day... Since I bought Oracle stocks, I seldom looked into my account. I just let it go.

I do believe some people in Canada do on-line trading. Please ask the people around you which site they use....Put in $100. It is not a bad idea.
I figure out you are a person with a positive attitudes towards the life, even though you are stll having a hard time.
            • Thank you for your confirmation.
I think I could try my best to this new life and my requests are not very high at beginning. The reason I want to buy Nortel is that the price is low now and I can afford it. Also I believe the economy will be better in future and the bankruptcy possibility of Nortel is very very few while the telecommunication will still boom in the not far future.
        • So scoop is not always a negative word? I think one is always trying to get more information s/he can and make use of as much relation as s/he can. That is not wrong.
But for those big figures, they should be careful.

BTW, does that mean relation is very important even in western world? I wish everyone could live in a fairer world. I thought things might be better in North America.
