I did check job market pretty often and come cross tons of testing jobs. So, I don't agree that there are not that many QA postitons here in Canada. As a result, your conclusion of the product development are not active in Canada is not true. However, such kind of discussion is not really very productive because it is all based on how we felt, that is the reason I don't feel like to get into the subject in more details. I don't have much time to surf around and provide more accurate picture of what is going on. So I am out now :)

QA job is a job to find bugs and help developer to locate the bugs. Firstly you should know how to build a testing system environment. It needs your relevant techonology as that you want to test. Then you plan your testing plan, and create your testing scenarios (also called test case). For some special testing request such as performance testing, you should create a testing robot to help your testing using computer programme language.

Tester will do the real test based on the test cases document. Usually should have two different test, system test and user acceptance test.
